What Does an Abuse Prevention Order Do?

An abuse prevention order is granted by the court.

It can be obtained against almost any family member or intimate acquaintance, including:

  • A current or former spouse
  • A current or former member of your household
  • A relative by blood or by marriage
  • A current or former boyfriend or girlfriend

Depending on your specific situation, you may request that the court order:

  • Keeps the abuser from visiting or contacting you
  • Prevents the abuser from having contact with their or your children
  • Forces the abuser to stay away from your home or work
  • Gives you temporary custody of the children
  • Keeps your address secret to keep the abuser from finding where you live

Even if the other person has not actually touched you, you may be able to request an abuse prevention order. All it takes is for the person to create a reasonable fear of imminent harm. You do not have to wait for him or her to actually injure you or your children.
