What Are the Responsibilities of a GAL?

Category F guardian ad litem investigators are chosen from among trained and highly skilled family law practitioners. They are appointed to investigate family situations and write objective reports. These reports are used in determining what is in the best interests of the children.

For example, in a child custody dispute, a GAL may be appointed to help the court decide if the father or mother should be the primary caregiver.

GALs are also frequently used in cases pertaining to:

  • Out-of-state removal requests
  • Paternity of minor children
  • Termination of parental rights
  • De facto parent-child relationships
  • Other cases involving a child’s best interests

A GAL’s responsibilities are limited to investigation and reporting. He or she is not allowed to serve as the child’s attorney or give legal counsel to the child’s parents.
